The chemical constituents in the root of Helianthus annuus L were studied by mean of activity track for the first time.the chemical constituents, bioactivity and medical action of sunflower genus were reviewed. The preliminary pre-test of chemical constituents proved the root of this plant contains phenols, flavonoids, terpenoids, lactones, anthquinones and organic acids, etc. In the study, inhibition of three different polar solvent parts against six phytopathogenic fungi from the ethanol extract of the root of Helianthus annuus L was studied by growth rate method for the first time. The three extracts showed some inhibitory effects towards these plantpathogeny fungi. n-hexane parts strongly inhibit Pyricularia grisea; ethyl acetate parts showed the best inhibitory effect against Rhizoctoni asolani, Botyosphaeria ribis, Phytophthora capsici leaonian; n-butanol parts inhibited Botyosphaeria ribis, Phytophthora capsici leaonian,at the rate of 100%.Besides, the three parts showed some inhibitory effects towards Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis. The dry root powder of Helianthus annuus L was extracted by the mean of solvent method ,then was isolated by TLC,VLC,CC.Two compounds were obtained from the root of Helianthus annuus L . Physical constant, chemical action, spectrum (EI MS,1HNMR,13C NMR,DEPT) of compoud A were measured Its structure was determined as β-sitosterol, This compound was obtained from root of Helianthus annuus L for the first time, the antimicrobe trial was carried out, β-sitosterol showed some inhibitory effects towards Penicillium chrysogenuin, Trichoderma viride, Aspergillus niger, Staphylococcus aureus ,Bacillus subtilis.Compound B structure was not determined because of the little sample, just done the physi-chemical character analysis.
