The initial objective of this research project was nonmaterial. With a new method Nylon 66 and Na-Montmorillonite clay slurry were prepared for a novel Nylon 66 /Na-Montmorillonite nanocomposites. In this compounding process, the Na-Montmorillonite slurry was blended with melting Nylon 66 by the twin-screw extruder in different ways. The effect of water content, which was added to Na-Montmorillonite to prepare clay slurry, had been studied. The electron transmission microscope (TEM) was used to determine if Na-Montmorillonite was exfoliated and well dispersed. The Nylon 66/Na-montmorillonite nanocomposites loaded with just 5 wt % of clay silicate layer, with high tensility, high tensile elongation and low impact strength, compared with Nylon66/Na-Montmorillonite (dry). The mechanical property and thermology were tested, and the microscopic structure, rheological properties and crystallization behavior of the composites had been studied. It was found that the presence of Na-Montmorillonite had effects on Nylon 66 as follows. The Nylon 66/Na-Montmorillonite nanocomposite was produced with melt intercalation. The nanostructure features were revealed by TEM. Part of the silicate layers were exfoliated and parts of the montmorillonite was dispersed into Nylon 66, which made into nanocomposite. The effects of Na- Montmorillonite on the nonisothermal crystallization behaviors of Nylon 66/ montmorillonite nanocomposite were studied by DSC.The water content which was added into Na-montmorillonite had great effects on the dispersing conditions of Na-montmorillonite in the Nylon 66 matrix, and some other properties. The second objective of this research project was preparing reinforced composites. Nylon 66 had been reinforced with long glass fiber. GOE elastomer was used to improve toughness of Nylon 66. The effects of different quantity of elastomer on the mechanical properties, morphological structure and rheological properties had been studied.
