The backup roll chock is one of the key and important parts of the rolling mill.It has a long machining duration and the accuracy of the machining is very high.This backup roll chock is one which is highly technical and highly profit product.In the recent years, the backup roll chocks are in great demand in the market. Since the quality requirement is more and more strict and the delivery time is much shorter than befor, the quality and machining efficiency become very important.Form years of production practice, we found that the defects of the backup roll chocks are mainly blank defects and machining deviations. The main blank defects are casting defects (air hole, sand hole, inclusions, crack, unevenofmaterial, etc.) and welding defects (crack, airhole, inclusions of the joints and deformation of the cover plate). The machining problems are mainly deformation of the bore, the symmetry error of the slidingplates on both sides to the center of the bore.This article makes a detailed analysis and study on the black defects and machining deviations found during manufacturing of the backup roll chocks. It also describes the reasons and affection factors for the defects and methods to solve the problems, as well as the process optimization of the backup roll chocks. The following are the research achievements from the analysis and study:1. Function and machining method for the main machining surface of the backup roll chocks,and the machinining procedure of the backup roll chock.2. Detailed study of the manufacturing problem of the backup roll chocks (casting quality, welding quality and machining quality), and design a method to study the causes of the quality problems.3. Factors which affect the machining efficiency of the backup roll chocks (blank quality, machining equipments and tools,etc.).4. Measures taken to improve the machining quality and efficiency from the points of casting blanks, welding quality and machining process.5. Analysis and research of dry grinding method according to high accuracy bore of chocks and according to the repair method for the deformed core of chocks (bore round off, chrome plating, repair,etc.), design and provide dry grinding device.6. Put forward the sub-constructors and make analysis for the machining capability of the sub-constructors andprovide the sub-constructors with machining process.7. Provide machining process optimization and the machining process after the optimization according to the requirements and machining plan of backup roll chocks.
