Background: People spend more than 80% time of a day indoor, and the quality of indoor air has much effect on the health of people. Indoor Air Pollution (IAP) is a major health hazard, accounting for 4 percent of the global burden of disease, and the burden is greater in developing countries, high-altitude rural areas and among the poor. IAP as a major source of ill health, especially among the poor in peri-urban, rural and cold mountainous areas in China, accounts for a large proportion of the lung disease burden in children and women. It is caused by improper and inefficient use of low-quality energy sources such as coal and biomass (wood, dung, crop residues) for cooking and home heating. The World Resource Institute estimates that biomass is still the main source of energy for 60% to 90% in developing countries, or for 3.5 billion people. In China, biomass (wood, dung, crop residues) is the main source of energy in many rural settings. The population in rural areas accounts for about 70% of that of the whole country, so the health status of peasants is a determinative factor to the total health level of the whole country. The research on IAP in rural areas, especially in poor rural areas is few. So it is important to study IAP in rural areas and explore the effective methods to control it.Objective: To know the characteristics of fuels, stoves; to know the cognition, attitude and behavior related to IAP in rural areas. Apply the PRECEDE Model to find out the IAP-related influencing factors such as cognition, social, economic factors; to seek the effective measures to prevent and control IAP.Method: Select 18-65 years women in three villages of Huixian County bycluster sampling and investigate them by questionnaire indoor; meanwhile select two elementary school in each village by random sampling and investigate all the students ranging from grade three to grade five who answering all the questions by themselves. Results: The interviewees have low cognition about IAP. Health educatin diagnosis through PRECEDE Model shows the key risky behavior is using fire pan and unreasonable configuration biomass stove, and the risky behaviors are influenced by knowledge and environmental factors. Conclusion: To prevent and control IAP, we should adjust measures to local conditions. Using mass communicaton and inter-personnel communicaton publicizing knowledge, using school health education promoting community health education, and using social mobilization, peer education and diffusion of innovation to change the objects' risky behavior related to IAP.
