Study On The Status Of Indoor Air Pollution From Burning In Helingeer Rural Areas

[Objective] To investigate the status of rural indoor air pollution from burning in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, analyse all kinds of factors that account for indoor air pollution, especially the local residents' modes of lives and behaviors, and evaluate people's demand for local community sanitation service, and then provide science data for setting down strategy of following intervention.[Methods] Two countries of Dahongcheng and Xindianzi of county of Helingeer in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region are chosen as research fields. 164 and 159 villagers who are from the two countries are selected by random as investigation objects. Public heath physicians and doctors of countryside hospital called in and investigated them respectively by a series of questionnaires. The questionnaires gather much information including of normal social-demology characters, the structure of house especially kitchen, the usage of family fuel, family stove characters, food storing and cooking and the KABP according to indoor air pollution. At the same time, the investigators talk with some investigation objects thoroughly as qualitative investigation, so as to get the main factors for indoor air pollution. [Results] The living conditions, average income and educational level of local residents are at a low level. The main fuels are crops-residue and soft coal in local place. One of the house structure characters is that the kitchen range is united with the kang(a kind of bed that can be heated by fire), and inabout 42.7% of people's homes, the kitchen ranges and the kang are in one room. About 67.2% of people never open door and window when cooking and heating in winter. The local residents are very short of knowledge related with indoor air pollution, and they have strong wish of accepting heath education. Through analysis it can be seen that the main factors that affect people's behavior are educational level and knowledge related to indoor air pollution.[Conclusions] Indoor air pollution from burning is a serious problem for local people, and residents are lack of correlated knowledge while having strong wish for health education. In next work stage, the intervention should be carried out with following points: spread knowledge related to indoor air pollution, separate the kitchen range from the kang in different room, clean and maintain stove and chimney in time, open the door and window properly when cooking and heating in winter, use ventilation fan in kitchen. Then reduce residents' exposition to indoor air pollution from burning as possible as they can, so as to improve life quality and health level of local people and cut down expenditure on diseases.
