Rational design through possible self-assembly and controlling highly ordered functional polymer, especially for coordination networks and supramolecular complexes, represents a topical and current research interest in the directions of chemistry, materials, medicals and biology and the intense interest in this field has resulted not only in beautiful and diversified structures, but in both unusual physical, chemical behavior and potential applications as optical, electronic, magnetic, catalytic materials, molecular recognition, absorbent, ion exchange, gas storage and biology activity. Lately, it is demonstrated that considerate selectively controlling inorganic building units and creating appropriative approach of assembly should to be the key in constructing target polymers and which is a stubborn challenging work for scientistseither. 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid (H2bpdc) is fine bridging ligands with multiple modes and could construct novel compounds with particular functions. However, the focus on ternary complexes about H2bpdc is very limited and the concentration is mostly about research about binary complexes. In this research, a series of new complexes of transition metals based on H2bpdc and terminal ligands have beenprepared by several kinds of methods such as hydrothermal reaction methods -interfaces diffusing method air diffusing method and conventional solution method. They are [Cd(bpdc)(tpy)]H2O (1), [Cu(bpdc)(Hdpa)] (2) [Cu(bpdc)(phen)2] 6H2O (3) [Cu2(bpdc)(bipy)4] (bpdc)DMF13H2O (4) which were characterized and analyzed by elemental analysis IR spectra, UV-Visible spectroscopy. Fluorescence Spectroscopy and electrochemistry test. X-ray diffraction technique was used for study of molecular structures. As a result, bpdc has exhibited multiple coordinating modes: Complex 1 bridged by bpdc is the first example of an interpenetrating triple-chains structure with an unprecedented topology and there is no interpenetrating triple-chain braid based on a rigid linear bridging ligand in which three chains penetrate into each other before. Complex 2 was an unusual binuclear copper 26 members ring brided by tridentated connecting modes. Moreover, bpdc showed itsversatility in complexes 3 4 in which it is reliable constructing 2D supramolecular structures or 3D supramolecular systems by hydrogen bondings between bpdc's provided potential supramolecular recognition point and water moleculars. At the same time, it comes to some disciplinary conclusion on analysis of structures, assembly rules, spectroscopy characters and electrochemistry properties of supramolecular polymers constructed from 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid.
