Eleven types of polystyrene, polymethacrylate, poly(phenyleneoxide)s quarternary ammonium salts and hexadecyl triemthyl ammonium quarternary salt modified montmorillonites were prepared and characterized by IR and XRD. Intercalated structures and some possible exfoliated structures of the organo-montmorillonites were obtained. The preparation and technics conditions of the polycarbonate-monmorillonite nanocomposites prepared by melt blending polycarbonate with organo-montmorillonites were studied. XRD analysis of the nanocomposites indicated that some of nanocomposites were intercalated structures, and others exfoliated structures. Further confirmation of the structures need to be performed by TEM. The thermal stability and mechanical property of the nanocomposites were studied using DSC, DTA, TGA and Instron measurement respectively. The results showed that blending a few of amount organically modified monmorillonites can greatly improve the thermal stability and mechanical property.Based on the data, a hypothesis was proposed, i. e., the thermal stabilities of polycarbonate-montmorillonite nanocomposites are mostly dependent on thedispersities and miscibilities between the organically modified montmorillonites and polymer matrix, whilst the mechanical properities is determined by crosslinking function of the quartemary ammonium salts and polymer matrix.
