Organically modified clays were prepared by the reaction of oligomeric polybutadiene surfactant (PBD) and hexadecyltrimethylammoniumbromide(HTAB) respectively with montmorillonite (MMT) and characterized by IR and XRD. Each organoclay was melt compounded with polyesters-polycarbonate (PC), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) using a twin screw extruder and the extrusion process was studied in details. Corresponding PC composites have been characterized by IR, XRD, TEM, TGA and mechanical property tests. Corresponding PET and PBT composites have been characterized by IR,XRD, TEM,TGA and DSC. IR results indicated that no strong interaction was observed between the organoclays and the polyesters in all of the composites. The results from XRD and TEM suggested that the structures of the composites are immiscible micro-composite, intercalated nanocomposite and exfoliated-intercalated nanocomposite for PC-PBD-MMT, PET-PBD-MMT and PBT-PBD-MMT...
