While furan resin sand technology being applied in the production of box-section shape steel castings with thin wall, the high temperature of this technology always bring out hot crack defects to the castings in the practical production. It has become a main obstacle for the spread of no bake furan resin sand technology. This research paper intends to analyze the causes and associated factors for the hot crack defects through practical work and research, trying to find the solutions to solve the problem and reduce the hot cracks of castings and the loses of rejected castings due to hot cracks. The improvement of casting quality and the reduction of incipient fault of security caused by hot cracks is considered in this research paper. By comparing the water-glass molding technology with resin sand molding technology, this research paper fully understands the species and severity degrees of the defects caused by furan resin sand technology while turning out the box section shape castings with thin wall such as: bolster and side frame, and analyzes and classifies the defects in theory. Based on the classified cracks, the practical corrective actions on technology are prepared, satisfying the quality requirements in mass production of bolster and side frame. As we understand that bolster and side frame play important roles during the operating of rolling stocks. In order to secure the transportation, the internal quality of castings requires a very strict standard. Thus how to prevent and reduce the fine cracks in the critical areas of castings has become a main barrier for bolster and side frame production with furan resin sand technology. This research paper analyzes the causes of fine cracks of bolster and side frame and tries to introduce a new technology to control the formation of fine cracks. The research paper recommends the liquid cooling material to replace chills and action during production and application in the specified products to satisfy the quality requirement of casting.
