With the rapid development of lock sets, the requirements to lock manufacturing equipments become urgent. As significant parts of the lock sets, keys with high requirements can hardly be made by traditional technologies and equipments. Therefor, CNC technologies are introduced into the devices for manufacture keys, and a special CNC system for key tooth milling machine is developed. The development of lock manufacture and the status of lock manufacturing equipments in current are analyzed in this paper. Especially, based on the requirement of key manufacture to new-style modern locks, the CNC technology is available for alterations to traditional key manufacture. Following those, a software and hardware scheme for the special CNC system for key tooth milling machine is proposed. Focused on the software development, some pivotal technical problems have been investigated in the following aspects: Firstly, according to the specialities of key manufacture, the integrated design of the special CNC system for key tooth milling machine is proposed, and the automatic programming system for key manufacture is emphasized , furthermore, the basic function and pivotal technologies about the system are presented. Secondly, the theory of key tooth coding is studied deeply, and then, the mathematical model of automatic key tooth coding is established, and the new program method is put forward, which combines the improved backdating and filter . the key codes can be made by this method mostly. Thirdly, on the basis of the group—programming thought that is one of the modern numeric control automatic programming methods, using the group technology of parts classification, the keys are classified. The processes of several typical keys'manufacture are studied in detail. And then the implementing of the automatic programming for key manufacture by G code is explained. Finally, basing on the above analysis and study, the special CNC system of key tooth milling machine is achieved, it can code and program automatically for key manufacture. The CNC key tooth milling machines have already been using in factories. The special CNC system can not only shorten the development period of new key products, but also improve the work efficiency in practice. What's more, it makes great progress in reducing the mutual unlock rate, making the products with higher and top grade, and meeting the requirements in key manufacture.
