Progressive die is a kind of stamping dies whose structure is very complex . Based on the review on the research of the CAD/CAM systems, it can be concluded that die structure design is the bottle neck of developing CAD system for progressive die. How to efficiently design the structure and components of a progressive die in the CAD system becomes the main problem to be solved. At present, most of existing 2D CAD systems do not provide the function of associated modification, and are still time-consuming to design a progressive die. This thesis tries to overcome these problems by applying the associated design. According to the characteristics of progressive dies, the assembly tree of progressive die is created based on several assembly models of progressive die .By using object-oriented method, the assembly tree of progressive dies are organized based on the associated. In this thesis the associated method is classified for four constraints: part's orientation constraints, geometry constraints, dimension constraints, adhering constraints, by analyzing the implementation mechanism of the progressive design function. The related key technologies including variable assembly design, parametric design and associated design are studied thoroughly .With the application of these technologies, the system can update quickly, which means the modification of part's design can result in the relevant modifications of the rest parts . Based on the associated design method above, the CAD system for progressive die structure which supports associated design is developed. With this system, designers can expediently design the structures and easily modify them, and the efficiency of a progressive die structure design is largely improved.
