Modeling, simulation and optimization are the core of process systems engineering. In the thesis, the steady state simulation and optimization for ethylene separation flowsheet are studied. The main contributions could be summarized as follows:1) The steady state simulation and optimization for single unit block and the whole flowsheet of the ethylene separation process are performed by using Aspen Plus. Comparisons of the SM and EO strategies are presented. Heuristics to benefit the convergence are discussed.2) Based on COM technology, the interface toolbox for Matlab and Aspen Plus, MAP, is developed. By using this interface, it enables to drive an Aspen Plus simulation in Matlab environment. It effectively integrates the computation capability of Matlab and simulation capability of Aspen Plus. By using advanced algorithms in Matlab, it enables to solve problems which originally cannot be handled by Aspen Plus alone.3) The modular method based on block object and stream object is introduced into the equation oriented modeling for the ethylene separation process in Matlab. It enables to build a complex flowsheet conveniently by connecting the block and stream objects. The accuracy of the model is also proved by examining the residual equations using Aspen Plus data.
