This paper is based on the study made in the earlier stage and the existing problems found. Guided by the theories of 'rainfall - infiltration - runoff generation', soil erosion and river sediment transport, the methods that combine the investigations and location tests are adopted in the research. The dredged spoil & waste slag and disturbed surface that arise from the development and construction projects in the Wulanmulun River Basin, which is the location of Shenfu-Dongsheng Coal Field and taken as the typical region of investigation, are studied through location tests, overall investigation and analytical studies. The forecast system for the soil erosion newly arising from the development and construction projects in the middle reaches of the Yellow River is set up on the basis of the established forecast models and the pertinent investigations. The study mainly covers the following aspects:1. Investigation and study: The development and construction projects have negatively affected the surface configuration. The large amount of dredged spoil and waste slag generated from these projects come to be the initial factor resulting the soil erosion newly arising. To investigate the soil erosion in the region covered by these projects is the main task of this study, and it is also the essential work for studying the soil and water loss. Through investigating the development and construction projects carried out in the typical region, the condition of the soil erosion newly arising in this region has been basically made clear.2. Experimental investigation: Towards different underlying surfaces many tests have been made, including natural rainfall infiltration test, artificial rainfall erosion test, and saturated seepage stability test of dredged spoil and waste slag, etc. The regular pattern of rainfall - infiltration - runoff generation and development has been studied detailedly and deeply, and many valuable results have been obtained.3. Analytical study: In this paper two methods have been used to analyze the water and soil loss newly arising in the typical region. The reliability of the research findings has been verified through comparing the computational solutions of these two methods.4. Forecast study: Based on the obtained indexes, parameters, erosion forces of rainfall and erosion resistances of soil, a group of systematic methods, including the mathematical model method, the soil erosion coefficient method, the loss coefficient method, the analytical calculation method against the existing soil erosion and etc., has been provided for analytically calculating and forecasting the soil erosion newly arising from the development and construction projects. In the final part of this paper, a summary is given and some suggestions are made.
