Frequently use of conditional biocides cause environmental harm for their high toxicity and hard to biodegradability. So it is important to use green biocides. Basing on gathering lots of information, this paper discusses the connotation of green or environmental friendly biocides and the importance of their environmental compatibility assessment as well as environmental compatibility of some commonly used biocides. Furthermore, this paper points out that the biodegradability of biocides is an important index of their environmental compatibility. This essay analyses the biodegradability mechanism of organic compound. Through comparing existing biodegradability assessment methods , we adopt Warburg respirometer, BOD5/COD and PCD (production of carbon dioxide) to evaluate Tetrakis Hydroxymethyl Phosphonium Sulphate (THPS for short) which has won the Presidential Green chemistry Challenge Awards in 1997 and confirm it's biodegradability in water bodies. In the same experiments, we take Kathon WT as contrast which is a salable product in our nation. Through experiments mentioned above, a convenient and effective way to test biodegradability of biocides has been ensured. Moreover, this paper also design some experiments on drug-resistance and biocidal effect duration of THPS as well as Kathon WT. Through these experiments, the contradiction of biocidal effect duration and their biodegradability was exposed. It is suggestive for the subsequent researcher opening up new biocides.
