The design and manufacturing time and quality of panel dies have direct effect on the development period of new cars, their quality and competitive capability. It should take more time in design and manufacturing of panel dies and can't guarantee the dies quality with the traditional method. However, the quality and reliability of dies with CAD is better than that with traditional one. It saves more time of dies design and manufacturing. So the CAD technology was widely used in dies industry. Firstly, the paper discusses the 3D CAD design theory of panel dies. With introducing the concept of surface feature, the author divides the 3D design process of panel dies into the two parts: surface design and structure design of panel dies, which serve as the basis of 3D CAD of panel dies. Surface design of panel dies contains 3D design of punch parts and addendum surface. And the quality of surface has directly affection on the manufacture precision and the quality of panel dies. Authors study sophisticated surface treatment, which is the key problem in three-dimension design of panel dies. The causes of surface design defects and the corresponding treating methods are summarized. Some geometry operations on surface in the succeeding process maybe failed, if there were some defects on the surface, such as gaps and mass data of surface model. Based on researching on all kinds of the arithmetic of surface reconstruction, authors propose a new method of simply surface base on point cloud, which get some point value from original surface and deal with them with interpolation arithmetic. Finally, the surface can be reconstructed with the interpolation point cloud. The offset operation is essential in the panel dies design because of its construct feature with casting. The paper also discusses various arithmetic of surface offset, and gets the offset value of point cloud with the method of inverse distance as weight. And lastly, the offset surface can be constructed just like above. Based on the study on the arithmetic of surface treatment, a whole CAD system of panel dies has been developed on UG platform by integration of current module of drawing dies, flanging dies, trimming and punching dies. The system consists of these modules, i.e. project initialization, work part design, functional group database, surface treatment, and rib arrangement.
