To show cross-sectional shape of fiber, the traditional ways to acquire fiber characteristic parameters used to get by hand, but less by computer. The traditional ways usually cost much time and need great effort, but the data are low precision and stability. How to get clear fiber cross-sectional image for computer image processing is the key to automatic extraction of fiber characteristic parameters.The embedding technology is one of the important factors for better fiber cross-sectional image. In "this thesis, colophony embedding technology for textile fibers was studied. It was different from traditional embedding methods of using collodion or paraffin. The fibers embedded with colophony were cut by rotary microtome. Suitable embedding method can ensure the fibers separated distinctly;suitable colophony can improve the contrast of the cross-section image;and appropriate rigidity of colophony can reduce the distortion of fiber cross-section. The influences of different technologies on the single hollow fiber (hollow polyester fiber and kapok fiber) cross-sectional parameters werecompared by lots of experiments. Testing results showed that the suitable colophony could reduce the extent of deformation of fiber cross-section apparently, especially for the hollow and thin-walled fiber, such as kapok fiber.The cutting technology is another important factor for the good quality of the fiber cross-sectional image. The characteristics (e.g. hollow, crack and contour) of cotton fiber and linen fiber were not distinct usually caused by unsuitable strength and cutting skills. However, the better fiber cross-sectional images with clearing inner and contour characters and fibers on the same focal planes were obtained by dissolved by some chemical regent. Meanwhile, the standard procedures to get better fiber cross-section image were established.Based on the clearing fiber cross-section image, distinguishing parameters of different eleven fibers were studied. Four parameters such as hollow percent, hollow numbers and ratio of length to width of circum-rectangle were put forwarded. Therefore, fiber cross-sectional shapes can be judged efficiently according to the range of the parameters. Basic measuring methods of perimeter, area, circum-radius and inscribed circle radius were defined for using characteristic parameters.Yan Xiao yan.
