In this paper, PAA and P(DMAEMA-co-AA) hydrogels reinforced with carbon nanotubes were prepared. First step, the chemical oxidation in a mixture of concentrated acids was used to modify carbon nanotubes(CNTs). After treatment, stable homogeneous dispersions of CNTs were prepared. It was due to introducing thecarboxyl groups and hydroxyl groups on the surface of modified CNTs.The AA hydrogels with carbon nanotubes were prepared in aqueous medium by radical copolymerization of AA in the presence of K2S2O8 as an initiztor, MBAA as a cross-linker. In same methed, DMAEMA-co-AA hydrogels with carbon nanotubes were obtained. By using DMA and Shimadzu Autograph etc, the properties of both PAA and P(DMAEMA-co-AA )hydrogels with carbon nanotubes such as swelling ratio by water, volume changes with temperature, pH sensitivity, ion-sensitivity, dynamic mechanical property and so on were investigated. The result indicated that both the two kinds of hydrogels not only have good volume stability and no ion-sensitivity but also have higher strength than common hydrogels.
