Taihu basin is a main developed area in our country, as well as an area of serious waterresource problems. As a result, the date in 2000 about the plain river network of the area isselected to be the study background and the assessments of water quality and water resourcevalue is made.Firstly, according to the summarization of various methods of water quality assessment andwater resource value assessment, fuzzy sets theories method is selected to analyze andestimaie the study contents. Based on the knowledge system of fuzzy mathematics theories,fuzzy identify theories model which is an intergraded method of water quality assessment isformed.Secondly, the water quantity and quality calculation are programmed depend on the data thatcould be gained.Thirdly, three water quality indexes ,BOD5, COD and NH3—N, are selected to be the factors,and the average water quality in 2000 of the river network is evaluated. The result shows thatthe general water quality of plain river network in Taihu Basin is rather bad, as most averagewater quality of each plain subarea is class IV or even worse. Water quality is affected greatlyby population and economic development.Finally, water resources value analysis ot every plain subarea in the Taihu basin is madeusing fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method as water acreage, water quality situation andurbanization extent are selected to be the factors. The result produced the differences of waterresource value between each subarea, and it is also help to the analysis of water resourcesustainable utilization in the area.
