The uneven deformation behaviors of slab during rough rolling correlate with metal incoming ratio closely. The flow rule of metal during rolling process and the effect of rolling conditions on material deformation behavior have been always interested in hot rolling strip plant. Hot rolling process of strip is related to a typical heavy non-linear question. During hot rolling, not only the deformation mechanism and boundary conditions are very complex but also the influencing factors are numerous. The rules acquiring from experiment and practical process are nearly finite and qualitative. It is difficult to quantificationally describe.FEM is fit for analyzing the question with complex boundary conditions and the practical engineering question which are not necessary to be simplified too much. With the rapidly development of computer technology, the computer numerical simulate technology, in which the FEM occupies a key part, acquired widely application in rolling process. From the reports on FEM analyzing of hot rolling process of strip it can be known that the research works up to now in this field mainly focus on stress field, strain field, temperature field and prediction of material organization and properties. Although some research works were carried out on material deformation behavior of rough rolling slab during width reduction controlling they mostly aimed at grooved erect-roll which is widely used at present, or they are concerned only to simulated experiment in lab and far away from practice. In this paper, the slab's deformation behavior and the effect of rolling process conditions on shape, size and width of rolled interim slab's head and tail were analyzed during erect and horizontal rolling by three dimension elastic-plastic FEM on base of MSC.Marc software in allusion to the characteristic of reducing width by flat erect roll in Pansteel. Besides, the distribution of rolling force, stress, strain and temperature during the first pass of E1-R1 were also analyzed with thermal-mechanical coupling method by three dimension thermal elastic-plastic FEM. The finite element model was erected according to practical condition. The results show that â‘ the simulate value are approximately accordance with practical value and the erected finite element model and boundary conditions are correct and reasonable. â‘¡The slab's width is reduced and the section shape becomes dogbone-like during erect rolling. The head and tail of slab form fish tail shape and the width of head deviates from its natural reduction after erect rolling. The slab's width is increased during horizontal rolling. The head and tail form tongue shape after horizontal rolling. And the width of the head is increased and tail is larger than the middle part. The deformation extent of slab during erect / horizontal rolling isn't equal to the simple...
