Recently, in order to overcome the disadvantage of emulsifier(for example: the utilization of emulsifier will bring pollution to the environment, the emulsifier in a product has some injurious in effect on the electrical, optical or water-resistant performance and surface properties), the development of the soap-free emulsion polymerization-the process with no emulsifier or only trace emulsifier(concentration < CMC) in the reaction system has been paid much more attention. The preparation method which has been used mostly is: charging an anionic comonomer into the soap-free emulsion polymerization system, for the purpose of improving the disadvantage in the slow rate of polymerization, weak stability, and low solid content,but only a few of soap-free cationic emulsion polymerizations have been studied。The cationic latex particles play an important role in sewage disposal by combining with anionic particles easily, and the cationic latex particles also have been used widely in papermaking, so it is very significative to study cationic soap-free emulsion polymerization.In the paper, two novel kinds of lattices prepared by the way of soap-free emulsion polymerization were studied in the presence of cationic comonomer.In the second sector of the dissertation, Soap-free emulsion copolymerization of styrene (St) and butyl acrylate (BA) with cationic comonomer methacryloyloxy ethyl trimethylammonium chloride (DMC) was synthesized, using azobis (isobutylamidine hydrochloride) (AIBA) as initiator. The effects of the mass ratio of St to BA , DMC concentration, AIBA content, the presence of cosolvent ethanol on the rate of polymerization, surface charge density of latex particle and the stability for store were studied. The morphologies of particle were observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM).
