The main reason affecting the grinding quality and machining efficiency is that the grinding wheel is jammed and the grain is wore to obtuse easily. So adopting an effectual truing method, maintaining the required sharpness of abrasive grits for wheels during grinding is one of the key technologies to realize the grinding of hard and brittle materials such as advanced ceramics. In this paper, we carry experimental studies on combining electrical discharge and mechanical truing for wheels and ELID grinding of zirconia and silicon nitride at high speeds.Firstly, based on analyzing and summarizing the theory of ELID, the cathode and anode brush of the ELID system are designed and developed, the experiment table for high speed ELID grinding is established. By studying on the electrolytic characteristics and the oxides film growing characteristics of the bronze bonded diamond wheel, the ELID grinding fluid is developed. Then, by experimental studying on the relations between the parameters of power supply and the discharge tolerance, the choosing measure of impulse current specification in different truing accuracy is obtained. As electro-discharge truing for bronze bonded thick grain diamond wheel can not meet its required truing accuracy, the combining electrical discharge and mechanical truing method is developed. Finally, operated on the high speed ELID end-face grinder, ELID grinding of ceramics at high speeds is studied. Grinding tests are performed at high stock removal using popular engineering ceramic materials, zirconia and silicon nitride. By experimental studying on the relations between the parameters of power supply and the grinding force and the ground surface roughness of workpieces, we confirm the optimized parameters-choosing measure of these ceramics. Comparison was made between the grinding processes with and without ELID in terms of grinding force, ground surface characteristics and specific grinding energy, the relations between the wheel linear velocity, worktable velocity, grinding depth, max unreformed chip thickness and these parameters are analyzed. As a result, the roughness values of surfaces ground and the grinding force in the grinding with ELID are both smaller than those without ELID. So the grinding with ELID can realize the high speed grinding for advanced ceramics preferably. In this paper, based on analyzing and summarizing the theory, the experimental studies on combining electrical discharge and mechanical truing for bronze bonded...
