Compared with other parts of the automobile, the panels change most frequently and their market time is shortest. Panels have many characteristics, such as complicated shape, large dimensions, high accuracy and strict demand for surface quality. Therefore, the designs for die surface are'bottleneck'for the automobile development. Research on the auto panel drawing die have been the hot-point and the difficult-point for a very long time. Especially, the design of the drawing die working surface is the key process of auto panel drawing die, and it is also the key factor on the development of auto panel products. Most of the shapes of auto panel products are formed by one drawing process, which can be considered as a continuous contacting process of sheet metal and die. Therefore, the contacting surface, that is, the die working surface serves the determining factor of auto panel's final form. However, the design of the drawing die surface are very difficult for designers, because they used to be designed mainly by the engineer'experience.With the rapid development of automobile industry, the traditional processing of auto panel die is invalid to meet severe market competition and the requirement of auto panel products. Meantime, the wide application of the sheet forming process computer simulation technology, has greatly improved die design's efficiency and quality, reduced research and time cost, and has been a significant technological basis pushing the development of auto panel die design.This paper referred to the massive domestic and foreign technical material, elaborated in the sheet forming value simulation theory essential technology in detail, points out when analysis sheet forming question should use the big distortion ball plasticity FEM. Secondly, analyzed the penal forming characteristic and requirement, simultaneously introduced the design principle of auto panel drawing die surface in detail, and put forward a design method to optimize the drawing die surface, viz. design—evaluate—re-design.Based on the definition of the forming ratio, this paper do some research on the formability by the method of the geometrically analysis in the course of die surface design. At the beginning of die surface design, evaluated the formability by the finite element inverse method, and judged the reasonability of the stamping direction, the craft addendum surface and the material pressing surface.
