Surface-modification and assembly of nano-particles have received great attention in the past few years. Tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) derivatives have unique optical, electrical, catalytic properties, therefore it is anticipated that nano-materials modified with TTF derivatives will be widely used in catalytic chemistry, mircroelectronic device, chemical sensor and cytochemical label. So far, TTF derivatives have been used in electrod-modification, and majority of those are linked with alkanethiolates in which the terminal thoiolate group can bond to the surface. In this paper, the TTF moiety is modified directly to the nano-particle surface via a single sulfur bridge.Major work in this paper:(1) A new TTF derivative has been prepared and it was modified directly to the surface of gold nano-particle. The modified nano-particle is soluble in CH2Cl2 and shows two reversible redox waves, which are responsible to the change of concentration of 4-hydroxy-2- mercaptopyrimidine, a small molecule.(2) Silver nano-particles modified with another new TTF derivative have also been prepared. The nano-particles are redox active showing quasi-reversible CV waves and have well resolved Raman response.(3) CdS nanoparticles are modified with the first TTF derivative. The modified CdS particles further assemble to a sphere that is a secondary structure of the colloid. CV behaviors of the TTF-CdS colloid are first obtained and a redox-coupled fluorescent phenomenon has been found.
