Electric discharge machining (EDM) is a widely used technology in nontraditional material removal processes, which utilizes discharge to machine electrically conductive workpieces, does not make direct contact between the electrode and the workpiece eliminating mechanical stresses, chatter and vibration problems during machining. For these reasons, the technology has huge potential capacity in the manufacture of micro shafts, holes and three dimensional structures. It has large applications in Micro Electromechanical System area (MEMS). As a hot research frontier in EDM area, Micro-EDM holds several advantages, such as simply machined tools, without force between workpiece and electrode, easy control and so forth. So it is suitable for micro holes, narrow slots, materials which are machined difficultly by conventional methods, and so on.In the article, one transverse micro-small EDM machining device has been developed. In the initial, the author looked up lots of bibliographies including alien and domestic, then analyzed the characters of EDM machining device, found out their disadvantages. After a long musing period, new type of spindle position was determined-the horizontal one. The solution helps put away the debris readily, which are yielded when machining, meanwhile the macro-micro driven form was harnessed. Both technologies are useful for improving the holes' machining conditions and raise the efficiency. In the practice, about 0.1mm diameter holes were manufactured in one minute on a slip about 0.25mm thick. Otherwise, the spindle is supported by two precise ceramic bearings, which to lead the accuracy of the rotation high and achieve to 0.8um, this is beneficial for holes round degree, then it is testified in experiments.The frequency analysis of spindle system suggests that resonance not occur between spindle and rack because of the difference of their frequency. The motion simulation finds a problem which was ignored at the beginning, then improved the design, make the motion better.
