Collagen is the richest protein in the animal world, it's content is about 25% in the total protein of the mammal. Collagen has uniquely physical and chemical properties, low antigenicity and excellent biocompatibility, degradability and hemostasia ability. Otherwise, it is highly hydrophilic, easily absorbable and nontoxic in the body. So collagen plays more and more important roles as biomedical material in all fields of clinic medicine. The collagen was extracted from pigskin which have a low price and wide source and blended with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan. In this process, the maximum maintenance of the natural structure was kept. The viscosity and rheology of collagen-PVA solution was determined, as well as the mechanical properties of the blend membrane. The optimized blend solution was wet spinned with the sodium sulfate as coagulant and collagen composite fibers were prepared. Then, the physical and structural performance as well as biological estimation were charactrized to the fibers. The contents and results of this paper are as follows:Firstly, The collagen was extracted from pigskin, after measured by using the SDS-PAGE. The results indicated that the molecular weight of the extracted collagen was around 300,000, the collagen keep its original triple helix structure. So the collagen can be used as the medical material.
