Photographic material has the ability to record a vast amount of social activities and store a great quantity of precious information documents. All of these form the valuable new-type archive branch. There are large number of fading, mildewing, turning yellow black-and-white photographs in museums and archives, which seriously influence the value of image preservation and historical signification. In order to extricate them from such a predicament, the archive preservation and scientific research institutions are devoted deep study to this problem, and have gained some achievements. But the revivification of the fading, mildewing black-and-white photograph has not been solved up to now. The contents of my work are the following:The first section of this dissertation discus'ses about various fields information of black-and-white photograph and the application of polymer materials in protecting historical relics. On the basis of these, the importance of the research on revivification and consolidation of fading, mildewing black-and-white photograph was pointed out.The second section is about the micro optics effects on the early black-and-white photograph emulsion layer. Through SEM on early black-and-white archive photograph emulsion layer, there are a large number of microns and nanometer gap and particles on the surface of emulsion layer, which makes the surface of photograph emulsion layer coarsened. This coarse surface causes light scattering and changes original properties of the light absorption and reflection, which makes original image become fading and mildewing.The third section focuses on the research of revivification and consolidation reagent and the comparison of micro effects. According to the micro optics theory in the second section, the revivification and consolidation reagent was developed, which includes the Fluorine material, un-volatility, anti-oxidation, anti-efflorescence reagent and so on. The SEM photos showed that the revivification and consolidation reagent has a great effect on recovering the original color.The fourth section is the basic research on the property of the revivification and consolidation reagent. This reagent not only has efficiency to strengthen the image ofphotographs, but also can appear the original image of photographs.This dissertation firstly explained the reason why the early black-and-white photographs become mildewing and fading from the angle of the micro optics effect. Certain polymer materials are used to dispel the air - particle scattering interface. At last, a kind of revivification and consolidation reagent was developed and a new solution was offered for keeping the black-and-white photograph archive as long as possible.
