In recent years polymer/layered silicate (PLS) nanocomposites have attracted great interest, both in industry and in academia, because they often exhibit remarkable improvement in materials properties when compared with virgin polymer or conventional micro- and macro-composites. On the other hand, there has been considerable interest in theory and simulations addressing the preparation and properties of these materials, and they are also considered to be unique model systems to study the structure and dynamics of polymers in confined environments.PLS nanocomposites often display excellent gas barrier property, because it is believed that clays can retard the progress of the gas molecules through the polymer matrix with "tortuous effect", but the relation between the micro-structure of PLS nanocomposites formatting in the preparation process and the gas permeability of the PLS nanocomposites is still not clearly understood. The additional vulcanization process for the rubber/clay nanocomposites (RCNs) will remarkably influence the micro-structure of RCNs. The study of the gas permeability and the corresponding mechanisms of RCNs shall face many difficult theoretic problems, and the preparation of RCNs with high gas barrier property shall also find solutions for many practical processing problems. The relation between the micro-structure and the gas barrier properties of RCNs was studied from three parts as below.1. RCNs with the matrix of polyepichlorohydrin were prepared, and corresponding micro-structure and properties was studied. Firstly, the RCNs were mixing at high temperature and normal temperature respectively, and the influence imposed by the techniques on the micro-structure and properties of the RCNs was studied contrastively. Secondly, the micro-structure and properties of RCNs was studied contrastively with the matrix of three kinds of polyepichlorohydrin divided by the molecule structures, the homo-polymerized polyepichlorohydrin CO, the co-polymerized polyepichlorohydrin ECO(II) and the tri-polymerized...
