In this paper, Yb3+ (5at.%): KY(WO4)2 (Yb:KYW) and KYb(WO4)2 (KYbW) laser crystals have been grown by the top seeded solution growth (TSSG) method and Kyropoulos method respectively. Crystal structures and thermal properties were analyzed by XRD, IR spectra, Raman spectra and TG-DTA, and cell parameters of the two crystals were calculated.The absorption spectrum and fluorescence spectrum of the two crystals were measured, the absorption cross section and emission cross section of the major peaks were calculated. The pumping parameter (B), saturated pump intensity (Isat) and minimum pump intensity (Imin ) of Yb:KYW crystal were calculated, and the parameter Imin (24kW/cm2) is very low when it was compared to other crystals with Yb3+-doped. The lifetime evaluated is 0.56ms which is close to the measured value.Room temperature CW laser action of Yb:KYW crystal sized 9.5×9.5×1.1mm3 at 1026-1044 nm has been demonstrated under pumping by 980 nm laser diode. A slope efficiency of Yb:KYW laser up to 52% has been obtained.
