In modern steel rolling mill, rolling guide is one of key equipments in rolling production line for high-speed bars and wires. Guide rollers clamp high-temperature red steel and is extremely prone to wear and oxidation, thus causing the average life of guide roller to only have 8 hours. Under this background, in this paper the following researches are conducted:(1)The failure modes of guide roller are analyzed, the failure mode of guide roller is determined to be mainly the high-speed wear and oxidation of the surface in contact with red steel, and it is concluded that the major cause for failure of guide roller is inadequate wearability and high-temperature oxidation resistance of working surface of guide roller.(2)A layer of rare earth NiCrBSi self-fluxing alloy is coated on the base metal of 45# steel by vacuum sintering method, through test, this alloy coating has excellent wearability and oxidation resistance. By research it is found that the intervention of rare earth has an obvious optimization effect for the wearability and oxidation resistance of coating with most obvious effect of the alloy to which 0.3% mixed rare earth cerium is added (Ce+La), its each performance index has reached the optimum.(3)According to the service condition of guide rollers and processing behavior of alloy coating, the structure of guide roller of composite material is designed with a view to both saving the precious metal powder and well bringing the superior performance of alloy coating into full play, thus making it have optimum performance and lowest cost.Finally, on-site test is conducted on guide of composite material in steel rolling mill, and the results show that the service life of guide roller of composite material is increased by a great margin, the amplitude of improvement reaches over 5 times, thus gaining good economic and social benefits.
