(1) Well-designed polystyrene with controlled molecular weight, narrow molecular weight distribution and a carboxyl group at the end of the chain was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization with a new initiator of 4-chloromethyl benzoic acid. Then the ω-chlorine end-group was respectively substituted by cumic acid, diethyl malonate and thiol. The thermal stabilities of the different end-functional polymers were investigated.(2) Polystyrene with carboxyl group at the end of the chain was coordinated with Eu(III) and Sm(III) complex. By these means polystyrene with fluorescent properties was obtained. The factor of molecular weight of polymer and different microwave radiation time was studied, and then it was compared with normal condition. The factors of the ligand to the fluorescent properties of polymer were also studied.(3) Polystyrene with carboxyl group at the end of the chain was coordinated with transition metal complexes. A series of polystyrene with fluorescent properties were thus obtained. The factors of the ligand and the metal to the fluorescent properties of polymer were studied.(4) Polystyrene with diethyl malonate group at the end of the chain was coordinated with Eu(III), Sm(III) and La(III) complex, and polystyrene with thiol group at the end of the chain was coordinated with silver acetate and nano-particle CdS. All the functional polymers obtained here showed excellent fluorescent properties.
