The methods of pattern construction are discussed and compared in this paper. The Japanes Culture Block, Wei's Basic Block and Donghua Basic Block are investigated as the samples of the pattern design by means of overlaping the patterns and caculatint the sizes of the main parts of the garments. It has been found that there are some differences in the pattern sizes made by different methods. It is important to investigate if these differences have influences on finished garments. On the basis of subjective evluation on the clothing appearance, an objective method of evaluation is expected to describe the pleats in apparel. An image collecting system is established in this work to obtained the pictures of the garment in uses. The image technique is applied to study the pleats on the sleeves. The relationship between the grey curves of the image pictures and actual pleats are analysed.Indexes are put forward to evaluate the shape of garment pleats on the basis of analysis of experiment results. It can be concluded that these indexes can be used to describe the characteristics of the garment pleats. It is expected to apply this technique to describe the visual effects quantitatively.
