Segmental downcomer is the type most commonly used in distillation columns. Therefore, it is very significant to study the hydrodynamic performance of the segmental downcomer.The hydrodynamics of segmental downcomer were experimentally studied with an air-water system in a Φ1200mm Plexiglas column with plate spacing of 600mm.The flowrates of air and water were controlled to make the clear liquid exist at the bottom of the downcomer in the experiment. The average liquid velocity in the downcomer was measured by constant temperature hot -film anemometer (CTA). The experimental results showed that the velocity in the center in the section that is parallel to the weir was smaller by 18.9%~35.7% than that on the both sides. And the direction of the velocity at the center in the section was vertical downward, whereas, the direction of the velocity on both sides was inclined downward to both sides of the downcomer.
