Take the study of improving usability of stainless steel welding rod as the research object in this paper. The influence law of lots coating components on some operational properties, which are arc stability, spatter, red tail, detachability and blowhole, were systematically analyzed. So the mechanism of effect of coating components on the usability was searched, and some experiment results for improving the usability of stainless steel electrode were gained.Through analyzing some domestic and foreign typical stainless steel welding rod slag, and analyzing the effects, the formula system was determined in this paper. In the system, the wollastonite and barium carbonate was put in except of the rutile, feldspar, marble and fluorspar.The uniform design method was used in the experiment, to make the data are uniform and typical in the multi-dimension. Take the coating components as variables and the operational properties– spatter, appearance of weld, detachability, and so on– as functions in the experiment. Put the experiment data into computer, then the mathematical models were gained by non-liner regression. And the analysis of variance on the mathematical models was conducted; it indicated that the equations are sound and meaningful. Also, the relations diagram of effects of coating components on the operational properties were given, by which the direct information for understanding the effects can be got.Through the mathematical model and the diagram of curves, a lot of information can be got. To improve the usability, the single effect of coating component such as rutile, marble and so on, must be considered. Also, the mutual effects between the coating components must be considered. And the square role also is the noticeable; it also plays a part in the usability of electrode.In addition, the Hannover analyzer was used to test the arc stability of stainless steel welding rod to make the study deeply.
