In order to improve the flocculation efficiency of polyaluminum chloride(PAC),a composite flocculant of PAC and chitosan(CTS),or PAC-CTS,was prepared using AlCl3, NaOH and CTS as raw materials,which has different basicity(B)of PAC,concentration of chitosan(C)and viscosity(ηcTs)of chitosan.The PAC-CTS was studied roundly by using all kinds of chemical analysis methods and modern techniques.The interactions between PAC and CTS were examined by IR and XRD measurements.The species distribution and transformation of aluminum in PAC-CTS solution were studied by means of Ferron complexation timed spectrophotometric method.Finally,the coagulating properties of PAC.CTS with different basicity(B),concentration of chitosan(C)and viscosity(ηcTs)value under different dosage and the effect of pH value were tested by jar tests,including turbidity removal,color removal,and COD removal.The experiment results show that:there are interactions between PAC and CTS of PAC.CTS,which Can affect the characteristic of PAC-CTS.The structure and morphology of the polymer also were affected by basicity(B),concentration of chitosan (C) and viscosity(ηcTs)value.Compared with PAC,PAC-CTS is characterized by having higher turbidity removal,color removal and COD removal,better coagulating efficiency and wider pH range by jar tests;Finally,the coagulating mechanism was summarized,The polymer coagulate PAC-CTS in water by charge neutralization,adsorption bridging and precipitation catching mechanisms,especially by charge neutralization,adsorption bridging mechanisms. In a word,composite flocculant(PAC-CTS)is a higher effective inorganic。organic composites flocculant.
