First, the research progress of cathodic protection is discussed. And a few of numerical methods are compared when they are used to settle the cathodic protection problem.Second, the preliminary informations include the conditions that the potentials in the corrosion system should satisfy and the BEM basic formulas of Laplace equation are also discussed.Third, to optimize the design of anode,BEM algorithm is givien for the average and variance model of inverse problem of partial differential equation.A new objection function is presented based on the mathematical model above and its BEM algorithm is given too.The numerical results of 2D I-type node in cathodic protection are obtained by BEM, and also are compared with the results obtained by the finite element method. The optimization model and numeical method are proved to be reasonable and effective.Fourth, the mathematical model of cathodic protection of over-long pipeline in 3D infinite region for corrosion engineering is discussed. The electrolyte resistance, sur -face resistance and metal resistance itself are considered in detail.A series of results of over-long cathodic protection in an infinite region are obtained by BEM.We compare our results with the experimental data and the results obtained by the finite element method in the bounded region. From the examples,we can see that the cathode can be protected against corrosion with only one anode on the pipeline.
