So far the development of digital printing technology continuously brings to the demand of office paper. In respect of quality, the paper needs to bear widely applicability increasingly to adapt to demands of different types of printing. The development of surface sizing technology makes paper-makers possible to choose appropriate sizing agent according to the end requirement of paper properties to apply surface treatment, so as to produce paper with different quality grades and utility.Nowadays one of the most economical and effective methods to produce multi-use office paper is surface sizing with combining modified starch and synthetic polymeric agents. The effect of surface sizing starch and synthetic polymeric agent SMA on paper's basic properties and ink jet printing quality were studied in this paper.Several conclusions were drawn from the research as follows:The SMA properties which affect the sizing results include types of ramification, molecular weight, the ratio of S:MA and types of salt solution. SMA imide bears the better property. Generally, the sizing improves along with the increasing of molecular weight and the ratio of S:MA.The improvement of starch on water resistance is limited. The stronger the cationic of starch, the lower the smoothness and the higher the Gurley air permeance of treated paper. Opacity gets increased along with the strengthen viscosity of starch.Adding SMA in starch significantly improves the property of sizing mixture. The water resistance, smoothness, Gurley air permeance, brightness and opacity of paper being treated gets further increased. It is also necessary to pay attention to the compatibility of two components in the sizing mixture and keeping balance between improvement of paper properties and the effect of end-use.Higher water content of original paper and higher sizing temperature help to obtain better paper properties including water-resistance, smoothness, air permeance, brightness and opacity. They should be adjusted considering the requirement of conditions. The stronger cationic of starch, the higher ratio of S:MA help to improve the gray scale, color difference, contour sharpness and uniformity of ink film of end prints. Finally, the results showed that the combination of SMA and starch can...
