As the world's sustainable development strategy, the repeated recycling of waste paper has gradually become the mainly way to produce paper raw materials used in papermaking industry. For the poor quality of waste paper fiber, it causes the quality of paper declining. But people pay more attention into paper quality, so the environmentally efficient paper additives is becoming more and more prevailing. A series of paper surface sizing additives based on starch has been made and applied in this paper. Firstly, in the first chapter, graft monomer of methyl methacrylate (MMA), butyl acrylate (BA) et al onto starch was carried out by using emulsion polymerization. The influence of mass ratio of monomer and starch, mass ratio of hard and soft monomer, the dosage of functional crosslinking monomer (JLDT-G), on the synthesis of starch graft copolymer and its surface sizing performance were discussed in this study. In the second chapter, in order to reduce costs, surface sizing agent was prepared by copolymerization with low price urea, formaldehyde and starch. The influence of the formaldehyde's dosage on emulsion properties and its surface sizing performance were discussed in this chapter, and further obtained sizing agent with excellent performance of ring pressure, hydrophobic, stability modified by hydrophobic components. In chapter three, in order to make full use of tanning legacy of waste industrial gelatin. High performance of surface sizing agent was prepared by industrial gelatin which modified by alkaline hydrolysis, crosslinking, cationic. The influence of the alkali's dosage, the amount of crosslinking agent and cationic on sizing agent and its surface sizing performance were discussed in this chapter. Finally in the fourth chapter, biomass such as camellia processing residues was applied in the preparation of papermaking additives. The optimum processing condition and optimum technological parameters were obtained. Finally the application property of the product was studied through its surface sizing performance of paper. This research successfully made use of waste products such as tea processing residues, potato slag and industrial gelatin. It means to turn waste into treasure.
