In this paper the study target was the resin matrix of a high performance foam, acrylon/methacrylic acid/acrylamide (AN/MAA/AM) terpolymer foam on which the author's team had been working for years. The foam was prepared through a 2-step method, of which the first step was to produce a uniform foamable AN/MAA/AM terpolymer under low temperature, and the second step is to foam it under high temperature, achieving the cyclization in molecule, crosslink between molecules and the foam's solidification. Because of the complexity of the chemical reactions duiring the production of the foam, in the prior period many problems were not understood well, restricting the development of the foam. So this paper targeted at the matrix resin of this foam, profoundly studied the molecule configuration and the macroscopical properties of the AN/MAA/AM terpolymer, and tried to introduce flame-inhibit agents and crosslink agents into the terpolymer which provided good theoretics and experiment bases for the flame-inhibited foam without halogen and for the further development of foam.In this paper in order to make clear the configuration of the terpolymer molecule chian, different homopolymers and copolymers were studied first. These different polymer systems were studied by DSC, FTIR, DTG and DMA method which tracked the reaction course and the changes of the functional groups. Through comparing and analysing the results, reactions during the treat-heating of AN/MAA/AM terpolymer, the conditons for these reactions and the formed molecule configuration were confirmed, providing good experiment bases for the chemical reactions during the foaming course.In this paper the AN/MAA/AM terpolymer mechanical properties, such as tensile, compress, flexure, impact, hardness property, thermal behavior (Heat distortion temperature) and water absorbtion rate were measured.
