Measuring the protruding angle of S style and H style holding piston rings is important in manufacturing. An instrument for measuring protruding angle is developed in this dissertation. There are six parts in this thesis, including method and principle of measuring, mechanical design, electric design, sensor selection, software design, and measuring results & error analysis, which discuss the detailed procedure of development in the below.Firstly, the background knowledge of piston rings is introduced, and the protruding angle is defined. Secondly, according to the structure of the piston rings, multi-point scanning method is chosen, and then the blue print of the measuring is designed. Thirdly, relevant hardware design is put forward. In the mechanical design, the mechanism transmission and the design of key parts are shown. In the electrical design, the main electrical elements and their drivers are described briefly. In the sensor selection part, the basic principle and the calibration methods are given. Fourthly, based on the features of the measuring instrument and the demands of the client, the overall design of software is put forth, and then the methods of implementation are explained. Finally, the testing results of main performance are given, and error analysis is also presented.The measuring instrument, which is composed of mechanical part and electric part, is joined together through a computer (the core), and a data interface card (the bridge). The software, consisting of monitoring sub-program and interface sub-program, enable the mechanical part and electric part to work cooperatively. It calculates the protruding angel of S style and H style piston rings after scanning, with showing the outline of the piston ring synchronously. The measuring software also has other functions such as save, print, date analyses.Currently, the instrument is used in the production line in CYPR (China Yizheng Shuanghuan Piston Rings CO.LTD), achieves high accuracy and good repetition.
