Because of the disadvantages such as large floor area, low efficiency of the traditional wastewater treatment methods, the integrated anaerobic-aerobic reactor was developed. This reactor had some characteristics such as simple structure, high efficiency, saving energy and money, running stabilization. The study focused on the operation and microorganism characteristics of the integrated anaerobic-aerobic reactor treating high concentration organic wastewater. Specific methanogenic activity and the substrate degradation velocity of the A part granule sludge was also studied at the high volume loading rate.During the continuous experiment, it had three stages which were the start-up, the stable running and the shock test stage. Using high volume loading rate and stagewise method for start-up, within the 13 days the start-up was completed, and the effluent COD concentration was below 100mg/L; At the stable running stage, the effluent COD concentration was almost below 50mg/L, which was better than the requirement of first grade of our national wastewater discharge standard; The shock test showed that both the A and O part had high flexibility with respect to fluctuating loading rates. The maximum volume loading rate of A and O part were respectively 47.89 and 17.61kgCOD/(m3·d); During the whole running time, the influent COD concentration was 3500~10500mg/L, the average removal rate of COD reached 98.67%, and the peak could reach 99.67%. The A part was the decisive function of the COD removal and O part was the guarantee of the effluent quality. 95% of the effluent could meet the requirement of first grade of our national wastewater discharge standard with the HRT of the reactor was only 7.4h, which was stable and efficient. The integrated anaerobic-aerobic reactor had good ability of deordorization. At the operation process conditions, this reactor could remove the nocuous gas and purify the wastewater simultaneously with simple process. But with the SO42- concentration increasing the removal rate of H2S descended. If the influent SO42- concentration was below 85mg/L, the reactor could absorb and oxidize all the odor from the anaerobic part.
