Adding additives into oil to reduce friction and wear and even to mend the worn surface has been widely applied in lubrication engineering for quite a long time. In the past few years, the emergence of nano-materials has provided a new choice for the development of lubricant additive. With the aid of nano-materials, a lot of novel work has been done with enormous encouraging achievements obtained because the tribological properties have been obviously enhanced. As for the mechanism of anti-wear and friction reduction, the following explanation has been predicted by most of professionals that the nano-particles act as spacer between the two friction surface, and some ever proposed that the nano-particles were rolling like a ball in the grinding area which leads to the reduction of friction coefficient. However, as the development of research, more and more people hold the points that the structural nano-particles show exceptional tribological performance as additives to liquid lubricants, such as hollow nanoparticles,inorganic fullerene-like nested nanostructures, which have multilayer structures, and feeblish strength among the multilayer, and leading to easily decomposed, but its mechanism of anti-wear and friction reduction is little to know.In order to make further research of FR and AW mechanism, and seek better heat treatment method, firstly the particle size was measured by the analyse method of X-ray diffraction and Fiber Optics Quasi-Elastic Light Scattering. The morphologies of metal nano-particles and the diameter distributing were observed by TEM and HRTEM, and the thermal property was investigated by TG-DTA methods and heat treatment parameter has been found. The Al nanoparticles are treated in the difference gases following certain the outline of heat treatment.For the purpose of clearly understanding FR and AW mechanism of being treated metal nano-particles, first we need to know what kind of lubricating state the FR property was operated, so we investigated the tribology property of structural nano-particles on the friction and wear ball-on disc testing machine, and Stribeck curves were made on the basis of testing data. After observing wear surfaces by SEM and EDS, we made an in-depth discussion of FR mechanism in different lubricating state. The analysis result shows that metal Al particle acts as a ball rolling in the Hydro Dynamic Lubrication state and acts as spacer in the Boundary Lubrication state to achieve the FR effect and AW.On the basics of tribological properties new heat treatment parameter are put forward.
