Technical workers who can operate NC machine tools being greatly demanded by enterprises, simulation teaching and training system of NC machine tool, which operates with the computer as platform, is considered to play a crucial role and the setup of such a system is being paid more and more attention to. Focused on the vertical machining center, this study was undertaken to explore the theoretical approaches and key techniques of building simulation teaching and training system of NC machining center and to develop a simulation system of NC machining suitable for teaching and training, which is based on simulation and modeling in manufacture system and is combined with the graphical technique and the simulation technique of the computer. The primary jobs of this study are as follows:1. A virtual NC system was designed. With the vivid FANUC 0i system control panel as the system interface, NC codes can be edited and modified by the virtual MDI panel, which adds third dimension to the simulation teaching and training system.2. Analytical approaches and compiling principles of NC program codes were studied and a compiler of NC program codes of virtual NC system, which is combined with the programming criteria of FANUC 0i NC system, was designed. Interpolation arithmetic can be realized and NC coordinate information files can be generated which can be used as data sources of simulation machining system.3. Databases of cutters, workpieces, clamps and assembly were set up.4. Through a stratification of modeling, the locomotion model of the machine tool was set up based on the analysis of locomotion characteristics of the machining center and this can realize the locomotion of the virtual machining center.5. The expressive model of entities was proposed according to the milling characteristics, which can realize the three-dimension dynamic simulation of virtual machining and an interferential-bump checking method was put forward which can be used to check parts, machining environment and cutters.
