With modern manufacturing industry developing from single-variety and large-batches production mode to the multiple-varieties and small-batches one, it brings everlastingly higher demand on NC machine tool. However, production capability and efficiency of the tool have a great connection with conventional operation. In the process, NC program and machining parameters such as cutting velocity, machining depth and feed rate are generally determined with the guidance from NC machining handbooks or operator's experience. During operation these parameters are difficult to adjust according to practical conditions. On the basis of analysis on embedded system and intelligent control methods, the paper concentrates on research of an intelligent controller for milling operation to solve the above-mentioned problem. Thus the research tries to give a new real-time operation method for metal cutting process.The research contents can be summarized as the following.1. Analyze the relation of between spindle power and machining state and the advantages of fuzzy control. Adaptive fuzzy control method with spindle power constraint is introduced to complete feed speed control for milling operation.2. Develop an intelligent controller for NC machining according to embedded system design principle, which is based on ATmega128 with spindle power feedback function. In order to satisfy the demand of adaptive fuzzy control system, a spindle power real-time sampling method composed of current sensor, voltage sensor and power chip is put forward.3. Design main program flow on the core of adaptive fuzzy control application and apply modular function design to the software development based on C language. Then a machining experiment is carried out with NC system. The experiment shows the control method plays a good role in real-time optimizing machining parameters and it provides a valid guidance for further research on intelligent control of NC machining process.
