In this paper, an analysis method of ethylbenzene has been set up by using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), which was purchased lately by the Synthetic Rubber Factory, Lanzhou Petrochemical Company, contrasted with an analysis method of ethyl benzene utilizing gas chromatography in the factory's Quantity Control Section, and the effect of technology improvement has been evaluated by the change of product quality. We investigated the influence of some parameters: MS auto-tune, GC column temperature control, the ratio of split flow, gas chromatograph column flow rate and the quantity of injection etc. We probed into the method of quantum and quality in the GC-MS analysis system, and experimental validated its repetition and precision. In contrast with the analysis of the same ethylbenzene, unknown groups in GC method have been confirmed, which were useful to manufacture technology. The analysis of the change of product quality has affirmed: after the ethylbenzene equipment in the styrene workshop of Synthetic Rubber Factory, Lanzhou Petrochemical Company, was improved , the purity of the improved ethylbenzene enormously increased, and the categories and contents of the impurity obviously declined, which accorded with the desire of the improved product of designed target in quality. So the improvements in ethylbenzene technology succeed.
