Total suspended particulates (TSP) is a kind of complex contaminant. TSP is harmful to the health of inhabitants living in the urban area and it seriously effects on the quality of urban air, communication of city and the life of city dwellers. The pollution control of TSP is the important part of quantitatively managing environmental air in China. The pollution caused by TSP is the first factor, which causes ambient air pollution in the most cities of China. The report on Chinese environmental situation in 2005 shows that particulate is the main contaminants which influence over urban air quality of China. There are 293 cities where annual average concentration of particulate exceeds secondary standard stipulated by Chinese government among 522 cities researched in our country. And among the 522 cities annual average concentrations of particulate in 152 cities exceed third standard. The cities having high concentration of particulate are mainly located in the north provinces. TSP is the main pollutants in polluting the air quality. The trend of pollution is variable, and gets better. But there is still a long way to go.TSP is the main factor of air pollution in northern cities, especially in Jilin Province. Therefore the source apportionment and pollution control are the crucial factor in improving air quality in Jilin Province. There are few studies about source apportionment in different cities but in single city. In order to illuminate the effects on the results of source apportionment in different cities, this study takes four typical cities in Jilin Province for example to compare the different results of source apportionment in different cities. The improvement measures of treating TSP in typical cities are put forward. The results are as follows.1. The results of source apportionment during heating season:The order of 4 sources causing TSP from strong to weak during heating season in Jilin City is: sand blown by wind, soil, road dust, and coal-fired dust. The percentages caused by these sources to TSP are respectively: 52.1367%, 33.0475%, 28.65% and 8.085%. Three sources that are sand blown by wind, soil and road dust contribute to TSP most. The percentage caused by these three sources to TSP is 113.83%. The percentage caused by other dust sources is rather small. During heating season, the first TSP source is sand blown by wind and the second TSP source is soil and the third is road dust. With the rapid of the step of urban planning and the increase of group heating area, the TSP caused by coal-fired is palliating apparently. The order of 3 sources causing TSP from strong to weak during heating season in Baicheng City is: soil, coal-fired dust and construction dust. The percentages caused by these sources to TSP are respectively: 36.07%, 28.565%, and 10.21%. Three sources that are soil, coal-fired dust and construction dust contribute to TSP most. The percentage caused by these three sources to TSP is 74.845%. The percentage caused by other dust sources is 25.16%. During heating season, the first TSP source is soil and the second TSP source is coal-fired dust and the third is construction dust. With the blowing of the soil and the grit into cities, soil becomes the main contaminated source. The order of 3 sources causing TSP from strong to weak during heating season in Tonghua City is: sand blown by wind, coal-fired dust and soil. The percentages caused by these sources to TSP are totally 88.29%. One source that is sand blown by wind contributes to TSP most. The percentage caused by this source to TSP is 39.4%, which may take its position and climate into account. The order of sources causing TSP from strong to weak during heatingseason in Siping City is: sand blown by wind and road dust. The percentages caused by these sources to TSP are respectively: 72.85% and 70.87%. One reason for this is the rapidly decrease in virescence and increase in mobile car.The contributes of road dust, sand blown by wind and soil to TSP are quite obvious, while construction dust and coal-fired dust are rather small in most of the typical cities during heating season. All of this reveals that the traffic condition and the soil need to be improved. Comparing of the plain-type city Baicheng and montanic-type city Tonghua, the soil contribution to TSP is not the same. Coal-fired dust is no longer the main source of air pollution in heating season. Construction dust is not important in polluting the air quality, because most of the construction is out of work in winter.2. The results of source apportionment during non-heating season:The order of five sources causing TSP from strong to weak during non-heating season in Jilin City is: construction dust, soil, road dust, sand blown by wind and coal-fired dust. The percentages caused by these sources to TSP are respectively: 49.55%, 37.6567%, 17.9125%, 11.3775% and 3.83%.The order of 3 sources causing TSP from strong to weak during non-heating season in Baicheng City is: soil, road dust and sand blown by wind. The percentages caused by these sources to TSP are totally85.46%. One source that is sand blown by wind contributes to TSP most. The percentage caused by this source to TSP is 56.05%, which may take its position and climate into account. The order of 3 sources causing TSP from strong to weak during non-heating season in Tonghua City is: road dust, coal-fired dust and soil. The percentages caused by these sources to TSP are respectively: 38.365%, 13.6%, and 10.545%. One source that is coal-fired dust contributes to TSP still obvious. The percentage caused by this source to TSP is 13.06%, which should be taken into account. The order of 3 sources causing TSP from strong to weak during non-heating season in Siping City is: sand blown by wind, construction dust and soil. The percentages caused by these sources to TSP are respectively: 57.45%, 11.595%, and 11.21%. One source that is sand blown by wind contributes to TSP most. The percentage caused by this source to TSP is 57.45%, which may take its strong wind into account. The contributes of construction dust to TSP are quite obvious in Jilin city, which may have something to do with development in city. Soil contribution to TSP is the most in Baicheng and Tonghua. The reason for this is the strong wind and low vegetation cover.3. The results of source apportionment of the whole year:Soils, sand blown by wind and construction dust are the primary pollution source, which is the same as the results of heating and non-heating seasons. We should take measures to improve air condition from this aspect. Soil is the primary pollution source in Baicheng. With the blowing of the soil and the grit into cities, soil becomes the main contaminated source. Therefore we should take our efforts to control soil pollution to improve air quality in Baicheng. The contributes of road dust and coal-fired dust to TSP are quite obvious, while construction dust and coal-fired dust are rather small in all the year round. So we must increase vegetation cover and make full use of clean resources.Sand blown by wind is the primary pollution source, which is the same as the results of heating and non-heating seasons. We should take measures to improve air condition from this aspect.
