Airborne particulate matter, is the primary air pollutant to our country's air quality now. Especially, inhalabe particulate matter (PM10) has been regarded as a pollutant which led to adverse effect to the human health, environment and climate. In this paper, an investigation project on the base of the analysis the monitoring data of airnorne particulate matter PM10 over recent years in Huainan city, an annual investigation project on PM10 pollution was designed scientifically and conducted in the typical energy-based city, a national coal base. Four sampling sites were set-up in the whole city, and PM10 samples were collected according to national monitoring standard of ambient airborne particulate matters. PM10 pollution was investigated, and the distribution of trace elements in PM10 was studied.Based on the monitoring data, mass concentration of the particulate matter was calculated through the weighing approach. Consenquentally, the spatial and seasonal variation of PM10 pollution and the relationship between PM10 and atmosphere conditions was discussed. The environmental significant trace elements were analyzed by the modern analysis technology in PM10 samples. Multiple elements were analysed by ICP-AES through the sample digestion in high purity acids (HClO4+HNO3+HF). And As,Se and Hg were analysed by HG-AFS following Aqua Regia (HNO3+HCl) sample digestion. According to the analysis results, the spatial and seasonal variation of the bulk and mass concentration of the trace elements was discussed in detail.On the base of comprehensive analyses of the urban air pollution background, characteristic of PM10 bulk and mass concentrations, the contents of chemical elements and their enrichment factors, and other factors so on, the PM10 pollution in Huainan was initially evaluated and the probable sources of the PM10 pollution was discussed. Furthermore, protection implementations to control PM10 Pollution were scientifically proposed in Huainan enegy-based city.The research results indicate that the PM10 pollution in Huainan city is relatively severe in comparision with international and domestic cities. Pollution levels of PM10 mass concentrations and pollutants deveried from human acticities are higher in winter than in summer, while they are remarkably higher at Xiejiaji district sampling site than other three sites. With the development of Huainan construction of "Three industrial bases", it is becoming an important work to investigate the air pollution of energy-based city for achieving the construction goal of "Ecological Huainan".
