The Up-flow multistage anaerobic reactor (UMAR) is a new style and high efficiencyanaerobic reactor. It can be operated at high volume loading rates and high liquid up-flowvelocity with low investment cost and space occupation. The study on the UMAR dispose ofthe molasses alcohol wastewater indicates that the UMAR system can show it's COD removalrate with 81%, when the influent temperature is controlled between 35~37℃, COD7400mg/l,pH 7.0~7.2, hydraulic retention time 7.1h.In addition, the experiment researched on the capacity of startup, stable running, resistimpact and re-startup of the UMAR system. The experiment shows that the UMAR has theadvantages of short startup period, loading enhance fast, high COD volumetric loading rateand COD removal rate. When the volumetric loading rate reached 11kgCOD/(m~3·d), and the COD removal wasabout 80%. After the system running had finished, the UMAR displayed its characteristics ofrunning stably, organic matter removal effect better and resist impact capacity strongly. In theaddition of hydraulic retention time 4.2h, the COD removal was 73%, when the volumetricloading rate reached 11kgCOD/(m~3·d), the COD removal was about 80%. The dispose effectof the UMAR could recover quickly after a long periods of time.Ater the startup, the characters of the granular sludge changed remarkably. The granularsludge was darker, the particle size obviously increased from 0.5-1.3mm to 1.2-4.0mm, thesedimentation capability was 104.5m/h, contrasted to the vaccination sludge, the specific methanogenic activity increased to 1.6 times, VSS/TSS value increased to 6.9%. ThroughSEM, granular sludge was covered by massive ball bacterium, bacillus and filamentousbacteria mainly, filamentous bacteria mutually twined the ball bacterium and bacillusbacteria.
