Epoxy resin is widely used in applications such as adhesion, coating, advanced composites due to its excellent chemical stability, high adhesion and low cost. But the cross-linked epoxy resin contains a lot of internal stress and thus is brittle when impacted. After well-dispersion process of nano-particles and preparation process of bisphenol A type epoxy, the nano-composites were prepared by in-situ polymerization. When nano-ZnO/epoxy composite was prepared, ultrasonic dispersion technology on nano-ZnO was investigated. The effects of dispersion and surface modification of nano-ZnO were characterized by FT-IR, TEM. Grain size of nano-ZnO was characterized by XRD. After mechanical properties of composite tested by universal material machine, fracture microstructure was characterized by means of SEM and analyzed. Finally, the toughening mechanism of nano particles on epoxy resin was also discussed. The results indicated that nano particles were uniformly dispersed in epoxy synthesized by in-situ polymerization. With nano-ZnO surface modified by KH-550, the interphase of composites could be improved. Because of nano particles were well dispersed by ultrasonic wave apparatus, the mechanics properties of composite were improved. It was found that when composite containing 5% nano-ZnO, the impact and bending properties of nanoZnO/epoxy composite are the best.
