With people's consciousness of environment protection increasing constantly, water-soluble acrylic resin is more and more used in fields of coatings, adhesive and inks etc.As the key material of water-based inks, link material, the function of the water-soluble acrylic resin affects the quality of inks tremendously. But in our country, water-soluble acrylic resin for water-based inks is mainly dependent on entrance at present, this impact on cost of production of water-based inks and water-based coatings directly. Therefore synthesis of water-soluble acrylic resin for water-based inks and study on its properties have high economic and social value.The water-soluble acrylic resin is synthesized with the solution polymerization. And it is prepared via solution polymerization which takes acrylic acid, methyl mcthacrylate, acrylic acid butyl ester and acrylic acid hydroxy propyl ester as the monomers, takes benzoyl peroxide as the initiator and takes n-butanol as the solvent. By discussing initiator's amount, solvent and monomers' allocated proportion, acrylic acid's amount, instilment time, heat preservation time, neutralization degrees and reaction temperature to the resin's performance influence, such as the water-solubility, the light transmission rate, the content of the firm, the conversion rate and the viscosity, we obtain the best formula of synthesis water-soluble acrylic resin for water-based inks: the AA amount used is 12.5%, the HBA amount used is 12.5%, the BPO amount used is 1.75%, the MMA:BA (mass ratio) is 1.0:1.0, the solvent :monomer (mass ratio) is 1.0:1.0; and the best conditions: the monomer instilment time is 3h, the heat preservation time is 2.5h, the reaction temperature is 100°C, ammonia is used as the neutralizer and the neutralization degrees is 90%. The function of the resin which made under conditions of formula and technological above-mentioned as follows: It is transparent liquid of canary, it have good water-solubility, visible light transmittance of its 10% aqueous solution is 98.4%, its conversion is 96.6%, viscosity of its 40% aqueous solution is 179s, and its glass transition temperature is 17.8°C.The water-based ink was prepared with the resin synthesized. And the index which obtained by checking functions of the inks finally demonstrates that many can reach or exceed the homeland company standard without exception.
