With people's consciousness of environment protection increasing constantly, waterborne inks characteristic of low pollution, low volatility, unflammability, avirulence (or reducing toxicity), no peculiar smell (or reducing), is attached more importance to and called as new green printing material. As the binder of waterborne inks, the capability of acrylic polymer has great influence on the quality of inks. This paper describes three different polymerization of water-soluble acrylic resin, solvent polymerization (n-butanol or isopropanol as solvent), half emulsion polymerization (isopropanol and water as solvent), emulsion polymerization (only water). The factors in polymerization system are investigated by selecting different initiator, solvent, reaction time and monomer proportion. The polymerization technology is also discussed. Aiming at the technology problems of domestic water-soluble acrylic resin production, the technology conditions of moderate production for waterborne inks are confirmed based on the experimental data.Improving the gloss, adhesion and wear-ability of water-soluble acrylic resin and decreasing cost, keto-aldehyde resin is introduced to the acrylic polymer. The method of introduction, dosage and effect on the acrylic polymer are discussed. The resins from different polymerization are compared, and the appropriate resin for waterborne inks is chosen according to the capability, technology condition and cost. The waterborne inks made from the resin is determined and probation by consumer. The inks reach the requirement of the domestic corporation such as Shanghai.Furthermore, the reason of the color change of water-soluble acrylic resin is discussed. The possible reason is given in theory and the phenomenon is resolved in experiment.
